Before going into the breath of the article it’s fair to acknowledge as a nation, we have a long way to go to fulfill America’s and Dr. King’s vision of civil and political rights for everyone.
Today, 50 years removed by an assassin bullet from our contemporary society, our social realities and ruling politics illuminates the premise that we as a nation still struggle with the undeniable truth there’s only one Race, The Human Race.
In the preamble of America’s Declaration of Independence, it states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”
When Dr. King, an American Baptist minister and activist signed-up to lead the civil rights movement in 1954, it wasn’t any different as a young man joining the American military, to fight for the rights and freedoms of America and all of its inhabitants, with the understanding you could be killed, while serving.
What our soldiers fought for yesterday in the Declaration of Independence, is transposed into civil and political rights today.
As a soldier, Dr. King fought for civil and political rights, a class of rights that protect individual’s freedom from infringement by governments, social organizations, and private individuals.
And like other soldiers while serving, he lost his life.
However, his life was lost under a terrible irony that clouds his service, which reveals Dr. King and his fellow soldiers being beaten, spat-on, jailed and killed, by fellow Americans (Fellow Humans) and their government, while pursuing unalienable rights promised by America and endowed by their ‘Creator.’
So, on the anniversary of his assassination, as we review the resume and passion Dr. King exuded in his perilous fight to usher America into its true Creed, we must realize, it’s not just what Dr. King wanted, it continues to be what {Our Creator} wanted, despite {Our Nation’s} slothfulness to fulfill an inescapable prophecy.
