Homicide Victims Remembered
Rise Up Rochester, Inc. Hosts Annual Service of Remembrance
On Friday, December 8, 2017, Rise Up Rochester, Inc. (RUR) will honor homicide victims at its annual Service of Remembrance. This service will be held at Baber African Methodist Episcopal Church, 550 Meigs Street, Rochester, New York 14607 at 6:30 pm.
The Service of Remembrance is free and open to the public and will include readings, testimonials, and a candle lighting ceremony.
“Holidays can difficult for people who have experienced loss, especially to homicide. This Service of Remembrance is a time to remind friends and family of homicide victims that we are not alone,” stated the Reverend James C. Simmons, Pastor of Baber African Methodist Episcopal Church. Ms. Wanda Ridgeway, Executive Director of Rise Up Rochester, Inc. adds, “With the number of homicides in the Greater Rochester area, it is important that families know that the political, civic, and entire community has not forgotten them.”

Since 2008 countless families that have had their lives turned upside down by homicide have received needed support through Rise Up Rochester programs like its monthly support group and annual service of remembrance. Hundreds of classrooms have learned how to prevent violence in their neighborhoods and thousands of students have taken a stand against violence through the Stop the Violence Billboard Contest.
